Crocodile monitors are endemic to the island of New Guinea and nearby islands where they are considered the top predator. Little is known of their natural history in the wild due to the nature of the heavy rain forest where they are typically found, although crocodile monitors are known to be diurnal and quite arboreal. Crocodile monitors display regional variation in color, and perhaps size.

Expeditions specifically targeting crocodile monitors have sometimes returned without sighting a single individual. Most wild-caught crocodile monitors are apparently collected as a consequence of logging operations.
