Donkey Kong (sometimes abbreviated as DK) is a video game character and icon who was introduced in the arcade classic game Donkey Kong[5] as a villain in 1981[6]. He was originally created by Shigeru Miyamoto[7] alongside Mario[8] and Pauline[9]. After his appearance in Donkey Kong, Nintendo[10] created the successors Donkey Kong Jr.[11] and Donkey Kong 3[12]. Following these early popular titles, Nintendo let the franchise rest and focused more on games featuring Mario, the original protagonist. Rare[13] was offered the chance to revive the Donkey Kong[14] franchise in the 1990s, resulting in Donkey Kong Country[15] for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System[16].
