CANTON - Jason Whitehurst doesn’t hesitate to name the best guinea pig he’s ever seen. It was over a decade ago, at a show in Louisville, Kentucky, where Whitehurst encountered a Peruvian breed with cleanly segmented color patterns and long, shiny hair that draped over its eyes like floor length curtains. “The density, the color, the texture, Whitehurst said. “It was as close to perfect as anything I’ve ever judged.”

Whitehurst, a manager at a cherry growing plant in Salem, Oregon, is one of the nation’s top guinea pig judges. He travels around the country assessing the animals, known in the hobby as cavies, at regional and national shows. Whitehurst estimates he judges 12 shows a year at the invitation of various cavy associations that cover his travel expenses.
