Although the Jay is by far the most colourful and striking of the crow family in the UK, it is a very shy bird of woodland habitat and therefore often hard to see. The Jay’s plumage is very attractive, with pinky-brown tones overall, black tail, white rump, black facial stripe like a moustache, plus a striking blue flash on the wings. Juvenile Jays are similar enough to the adults to make them easy to identify. The Jay’s loud shrieking call often gives its presence away in dense woodland. The Jay is medium sized species of corvid, or crow, with a wingspan of around 55cm and a length of 35cm from the tip of the bill to tail. Male and female Jays have the same plumage, but it is sometimes possible to tell male and female apart if a pair is stood together, because the male is generally slightly larger than the female.
