Caterpillars are at the bottom of the food chain, and they know it. In their quest to become butterflies, they focus only on two things. The first is to eat. The second is to avoid being eaten. Caterpillars have evolved a fascinating variety of defences to keep themselves safe from predators. From accumulating toxins in their bodies, to sprouting poisonous bristles all over to deter enemies, these worms mean business when it comes to staying alive. One form of defence I’m particularly fascinated by is camouflage. Some caterpillars have evolved intricate techniques to blend right in to their surroundings. If your eyes are sharp enough, you can spot many interesting examples of caterpillar camouflage in Bengaluru.
