There are three subspecies of pond slider turtles, or slider
turtles. This care sheet applies to all three as they are all
closely related in size, diet and husbandry requirements. The
three subspecies are: Red-Eared Slider, Trachemys scripta
elegans, Yellow-Bellied Slider, Trachemys scripta
scripta and Cumberland Slider,Trachemys scripta
troostii.
General Description
Slider turtles are medium-to-large sized turtles and are good
beginner turtles for a person who has a large aquarium or outdoor
pond with deep water. They can become very comfortable around
people if they are handled often while small. They readily accept
commercial turtle pellets, frozen turtle food and fresh natural
foods. They can and do learn to beg for treats. Males can grow to
10 inches in length; females can grow to 12 inches.
